Caution When Gathering Foods in the Wild for Your Diet
There are a few very serious 'rules to the road'
when it comes to collecting foods in the wild from Mother Nature's
back yard. Here is the minimum you should know when you go gathering:
Snakes are renown for the art of camouflage so exercise caution
when gathering from brushy, woody and rocky areas.
Gloves
can save skin from a multitude of ills - poison ivy to stinging nettle.
Some nettles will leave a hand numb a good day after the event
- which brings us to:
Never
touch anything you aren't familiar with AND never eat anything that
you aren't absolutely certain is ingestible.
Avoid
collecting specimens from the roadside as they may contain toxins
from pesticides, as well as matter particulates from automobiles.
Always
leave food behind for the animals who depend on it for survival.
Carry
a firstaid kit and a mobile phone in the event of an emergency.
Never
go out without a compass, a pack of matches, a flashlight and a
canteen of water.
